Tired of working in jobs that weren't right for her where she couldn't channel her creativity, and more importantly, she didn’t enjoy, Mercedes recently set up her own business.

She has always had an aptitude for fashion, design and all things wearable and found it hugely rewarding to help people feel more confident and empowered through their clothes. Taking the risk as a young entrepreneur, she decided to take the plunge and set up as a personal shopper and stylist.

Once the training through London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins were completed, building a website was her next step. As with many entrepreneurs, this was a learning curve in itself and once it went live, her next challenge was to get the website out there in the world and listed on Google.

There was more to this than Merceds first thought and immersed in all the complex issues surrounding optimisation, she discovered Paula’s SEO workshop.

Mercedes said: "There’s no use having a great website if the world doesn’t know it exists. Paula explained the significance of keywords and their placement throughout a website. My existing keywords were weak and inefficient, once I started thinking them through more carefully and placing them more strategically on my pages from headers to links, add campaigns and meta data, things began to move.

In her workshop Paula impressed the need to keep meta keywords relevant and specific to each page, and highlighted the “faut pas” novices make on their pages. My eyes were truly opened at the workshop, I had a vague notion of the importance of link building and a Google presence and discovered how much you can do to improve your ranking. I think an effective SEO strategy is an absolute must for anyone with a website.

"Frankly, I cannot imagine going without and successfully promoting a business or product on the web. I am not a particularly “techie” person, some of Paula’s pointers at the workshop took me a while to get my head around,  but once you start, it all makes perfect sense and indeed is common sense!"

Merceds is now constantly optimising and tweaking her site. SEO is a work in progress and pretty much a full time job in itself! The great news is that Mercedes has noticed a marked increase in interest in her website and can now accurately monitor and study the performance levels of each section through Ad words and Google analytics.
